Compress an iPhone HEIC Photo to JPG under 100 KB

An iPhone photo is often a .heic file. Chrome’s file picker will accept it because the input says image/*. Chrome will not draw it. The old compressor then showed a red “Failed” and nothing else. That is not a corrupt photo — it is a missing decoder. FlashKit Tools now decodes HEIC/HEIF in this tab with the same helper JPG to PDF already used, then compresses the resulting JPEG. The decoder is lazy-loaded: it is not in the first-paint bundle and it is not preloaded in the HTML.

Safari on Apple devices can often decode HEIC natively. This guide is for the Chrome / Edge path people actually hit on a Windows or Android machine when a relative AirDrops a .heic.

HEIC → JPG under 100 KB

Decoder loads only when you pick HEIC. 100 KB = 100,000 bytes. Nothing is uploaded.

Open Image Compressor

What “Failed” used to mean

The queue created an object URL, asked Image() to load it, and treated onerror as a generic failure. No HEIC bytes were inspected. The fix is: if the name or type looks like HEIC/HEIF, dynamic-import the decoder, turn the file into a JPEG in memory, then run the same target-size path as any other photo. If the decoder throws, the row says the browser could not decode that HEIC and suggests exporting JPG from Photos — not a silent skip.

Then hit 100 KB

A decoded HEIC is still a 12 MP photograph. Target Size → 100 KB keeps JPEG quality at a usable floor and shrinks dimensions until the file is ≤ 100,000 bytes. If you also need a form box, enable Resize (passport, PAN, or 35×45 mm). For the quality trade-off between 100 KB and 50 KB see 100 KB vs 50 KB.

Step-by-step

  1. AirDrop or download the .heic onto the computer you will use.
  2. Open Image Compressor. Drop the file. The first HEIC in a session may take a few seconds while the decoder loads.
  3. Leave Target Size on 100 KB and output JPEG.
  4. Download *_compressed.jpg. If you queue several files, Download all as ZIP — the ZIP URL is kept for a minute so Safari and Firefox can finish the save.

Several HEICs into one PDF is a different job: combine phone photos including HEIC.

Drop the .heic

Clear error if it will not decode. 100 KB target after it does.
