Combine Phone Photos (Including iPhone HEIC) Into One PDF

A travel folder is rarely one format. Android phones write JPEG. iPhones still default to HEIC. Screenshots are often PNG. FlashKit Tools’ JPG / PNG / HEIC to PDF page accepts that mix in one queue, reorders it as a thumbnail grid, and builds one PDF in the current tab. The files are not uploaded.

This is not the merge-PDF-plus-JPG guide — that lives at merge PDF and JPG into one PDF for when some pages are already PDFs. This post is photos only, including HEIC. For A4 paper without cropping, see JPG to PDF in A4 size. For a whole-file KB cap, see under 200 KB / 500 KB.

What happens to a HEIC file

HEIC is not a native PDF image. When you pick a .heic or .heif file (or a file typed image/heic), the page lazy-loads a decoder and converts that photo to JPEG in memory. If decode fails — an unusual brand, a burst stack the WASM cannot open — you see an error naming the file. Export that shot as JPG from the Photos app and add it again. The tool does not silently drop the file and pretend the PDF is complete.

The decoder is not part of the first-paint bundle. Opening the page without a HEIC keeps the same small island JavaScript as the other PDF tools. That is the performance contract from the prerender work: the article HTML is the LCP, heavy libraries wait for a file.

Order, EXIF, and Auto pages

The thumbnail grid is the page order. Drag a tile or use the accessible Move left / Move right buttons. Each tile has a remove control. Phone portraits often store pixels on their side with EXIF 6 or 8; those tags are baked so the preview and the PDF page match what you saw in the camera roll. Auto orientation then assigns a landscape A4/Letter page to a wide photo and a portrait page to a tall one.

Step-by-step

  1. Collect the shots. HEIC from iPhone is fine. TIFF and camera RAW are not — convert those first.
  2. Open JPG to PDF and drop the files. A 25 MB warning means a phone tab may freeze, not a server quota.
  3. Wait if a HEIC is decoding. Fix any named error by exporting that file as JPG.
  4. Reorder. Set A4 or Letter, Auto, and a margin. Create the PDF and check page 1 is the first tile.

Lab mix: six formats, one PDF

The same six-file run used for the A4 guide produced one 78,527-byte PDF. HEIC was page 6 (landscape 640×480 on an 841.89 × 595.28 pt sheet). The HEIC decoder is a separate ~3.2 MB chunk and was requested once while adding files — not on first paint. First-party JavaScript on the prerendered tool shell is about 136 KB gzip (entry + modulepreloads). pdf-lib and heic-to are not preloaded. If your HEIC fails, the error names the file; export JPG from Photos and add that instead.

When to compress first

A dozen 12 MP phone photos can make a 20 MB PDF. If the recipient’s mailbox or a portal has a cap, switch to Target Size on the same page (100 KB, 200 KB, 300 KB, 500 KB, or 1 MB) or compress individual shots in the image compressor before you embed. Location tags on ID photos should be stripped with the EXIF/GPS stripper first — this converter does not remove GPS.
