India income tax calculator
This page compares the old and new income-tax regimes for a resident salaried individual in Financial Year 2026-27 (Tax Year 2026-27 under the Income-tax Act, 2025; Assessment Year 2027-28). Enter annual gross salary, other income, age, and the old-regime deductions you actually claim. The calculator returns taxable income, slab-wise tax, rebate under section 87A, surcharge where it applies, the 4% Health and Education Cess, total tax, and a monthly TDS figure for both regimes. A banner states how much you save with the cheaper regime. Everything runs in this browser tab. FlashKit does not store the numbers, does not file an ITR, and does not replace a chartered accountant.
The new regime is the default. Finance Bill, 2026 left FY 2026-27 slab rates unchanged from the Finance Act, 2025 structure that the Income Tax Department still publishes for AY 2026-27. New-regime slabs: nil up to ₹4 lakh; 5% on ₹4–8 lakh; 10% on ₹8–12 lakh; 15% on ₹12–16 lakh; 20% on ₹16–20 lakh; 25% on ₹20–24 lakh; 30% above ₹24 lakh. The salaried standard deduction is ₹75,000. Rebate u/s 87A is up to ₹60,000 when taxable income does not exceed ₹12 lakh, so a ₹12.75 lakh salary with no other income is typically nil after the standard deduction. If taxable income is just above ₹12 lakh, 87A-style marginal relief caps tax (before cess) at the rupees above ₹12 lakh so the liability does not jump off a cliff.
The old regime still uses the older slabs and a richer deduction list. For a resident below 60: nil up to ₹2.5 lakh; 5% on ₹2.5–5 lakh; 20% on ₹5–10 lakh; 30% above ₹10 lakh. Seniors (60–79) get a ₹3 lakh nil slab; super seniors (80+) get ₹5 lakh. Standard deduction is ₹50,000. Rebate u/s 87A is up to ₹12,500 when taxable income does not exceed ₹5 lakh. You can claim 80C (capped at ₹1.5 lakh), 80D (this page caps the typed amount at ₹1 lakh), an already-computed HRA exemption, self-occupied home-loan interest u/s 24(b) (capped at ₹2 lakh), additional NPS u/s 80CCD(1B) (₹50,000), and a free-text “other deductions” box. Those amounts do not reduce new-regime tax. Employer NPS u/s 80CCD(2) is allowed in the new regime in the Act — this form does not have a separate field for it.
Worked examples using the same engine as the form (no old-regime deductions, age below 60). ₹7 lakh salary: new-regime taxable ₹6.25 lakh, tax nil after 87A; old-regime taxable ₹6.50 lakh, slab tax ₹42,500 plus 4% cess ₹1,700 = ₹44,200. ₹12.75 lakh salary: new-regime taxable exactly ₹12 lakh, rebate ₹60,000, tax nil; old-regime taxable ₹12.25 lakh, total about ₹1,87,200. ₹13 lakh salary is the 87A marginal-relief edge: new-regime taxable ₹12.25 lakh, slab tax ₹63,750 is pulled down to ₹25,000, plus cess ₹1,000 = ₹26,000. ₹15 lakh: new ₹97,500 vs old ₹2,57,400. ₹25 lakh: new ₹3,19,800 vs old ₹5,69,400. ₹60 lakh: both sides take 10% surcharge (income above ₹50 lakh) and 4% cess — new about ₹15,52,980 vs old about ₹18,27,540. Large 80C/HRA/24(b) claims can still make the old regime cheaper; that is why the deduction fields exist.
Surcharge (on tax after rebate) is 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore, and 37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime only — the new regime stops at 25%. Marginal relief applies at those thresholds so tax-plus-surcharge does not exceed tax at the threshold plus the extra income. Health and Education Cess is 4% on tax plus surcharge; there is no cess relief. Monthly TDS on this page is simply annual tax ÷ 12, which is a planning split, not your employer’s Form 16 algorithm (they also track perquisites, professional tax, and the regime you declared). Sources: the Income Tax Department salaried-individual help for AY 2026-27, the Finance Bill 2026 memorandum (FY 2026-27 rates unchanged), the official threshold-limits note for standard deduction and 87A, and the Income-tax Act, 2025 (in force 1 April 2026). How to Use
- Enter annual gross salary in rupees (for example 1500000). Do not type commas.
- Add other taxable income if you have it. Capital gains, special-rate income, and clubbing are not modelled.
- Pick the age bracket. Only the old-regime nil slab changes; new-regime slabs are the same at every age.
- If you will file under the old regime, type 80C, 80D, a pre-computed HRA exemption, 24(b) interest, NPS 80CCD(1B), and any other Chapter VIA claims. Caps are applied automatically.
- Read both cards, the savings banner, and the slab tables. Copy summary if you want the figures in a notes app. Then confirm with Form 16, AIS, and a CA.
Key Features
- FY 2026-27 / Tax Year 2026-27 old vs new regime in one view
- 87A rebate, 87A marginal relief just above ₹12 lakh, surcharge bands, 4% cess
- Old-regime 80C, 80D, HRA, 24(b), NPS 80CCD(1B), and other deductions with statutory caps
- Slab breakdown tables and a monthly TDS split (annual tax ÷ 12)
- Runs locally — estimate only, not tax advice or an ITR
Which regime usually suits whom
- New regime is the default and usually wins when you have few deductions: a renter without large 80C/80D, or anyone whose taxable income stays at or under ₹12 lakh after the ₹75,000 standard deduction.
- Old regime can still win when HRA exemption, ₹1.5 lakh of 80C, health insurance, and up to ₹2 lakh of self-occupied 24(b) interest stack up. Run the same salary twice — once with zeros, once with the claims you can prove.
- Age only helps on the old side (₹3 lakh or ₹5 lakh nil slab). New-regime slabs ignore age.
- People with business income who opted out via Form 10-IEA are stuck until they are allowed back in. This page is built for salaried (non-business) switchers who can choose each year in the ITR.
- A cheaper number here is not a reason to drop PF, insurance, or a home loan. Those choices have non-tax value. Use the EMI calculator for the installment and a CA for the return.
Common mistakes this calculator will not save you from
- Typing monthly salary as annual. Multiply CTC or the Form 16 “salary as per provisions” by the right period first.
- Entering advertised HRA instead of the exempt amount (least of actual HRA, 40%/50% of salary, and rent minus 10% of salary).
- Assuming 80C + 80CCD(1B) + 80D have no caps. This page caps them; your ITR will too.
- Forgetting that new-regime 87A looks at taxable income after the ₹75,000 standard deduction, not at CTC. ₹12.75 lakh salary is the usual nil-tax talking point, not ₹12 lakh CTC.
- Treating monthly TDS on this page as the amount your employer must deduct. Employers follow the regime you declared and the CBDT TDS rules, including surcharge thresholds on projected annual income.
What is left out on purpose
- Capital gains (111A / 112 / 112A), dividend surcharge special rules, professional tax, employer NPS 80CCD(2), family-pension deduction, and leave-encashment exemptions.
- Let-out house-property 24(b) without the ₹2 lakh cap, loss set-off, and carry-forward. Type only the self-occupied interest you can claim, or put a CA-computed figure in “other deductions”.
- Advance-tax interest (234B/234C), late-filing fee, and rebate interaction with special-rate income.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which financial year does this income tax calculator use?
FY 2026-27 / Tax Year 2026-27 (AY 2027-28) under the Income-tax Act, 2025. Finance Bill, 2026 did not change the slab rates enacted earlier. Sources: incometax.gov.in salaried-individual help, the FY 2026-27 memorandum, and the official 87A / standard-deduction thresholds. Confirm before you file.
Is income up to ₹12.75 lakh tax-free in the new regime?
For a resident with only salary, usually yes: ₹12.75 lakh minus the ₹75,000 standard deduction is ₹12 lakh of taxable income, and rebate u/s 87A can wipe the ₹60,000 slab tax. Other income, a missing standard deduction, or a different year can change that. Just above ₹12 lakh taxable, marginal relief applies so tax does not jump from zero to ₹60,000-plus.
Which deductions work in the new tax regime?
This page applies only the ₹75,000 standard deduction on the new side. The Act still allows a few items such as employer NPS u/s 80CCD(2) that are not fields here. 80C, 80D, HRA exemption, self-occupied 24(b), and 80CCD(1B) are old-regime only in this calculator.
Does the calculator include surcharge and cess?
Yes. Surcharge starts above ₹50 lakh (10%, then 15%, 25%, and 37% only in the old regime above ₹5 crore). Marginal relief applies at those steps. Health and Education Cess is 4% on tax plus surcharge. Monthly TDS is total tax divided by 12.
Is this official Income Tax Department software or tax advice?
No. It is a planning calculator. The Income Tax Department portal, your Form 16 / AIS, and a chartered accountant are the sources of truth. FlashKit does not file an ITR and does not talk to incometax.gov.in on your behalf.
Is my salary uploaded or stored?
No. Math runs in this tab. Closing or refreshing the page drops the inputs. Ads on the page are separate from the calculator. This is not personalised tax advice.
