YouTube Thumbnail Size and Compressing under 2 MB
YouTube’s own Help article — Add custom thumbnails, checked 5 November 2026 — is the source for this page, not a blog rumour. The current desktop wording recommends 3840×2160 for videos and 2160×3840 for Shorts, a minimum width (or height, for Shorts) of 640 pixels, JPG or PNG, and 16:9 (videos) or 9:16 (Shorts). File-size limits depend on the device you upload from: 2 MB on mobile for video thumbnails, 50 MB on desktop. An older Help revision, still quoted around the web, said 1280×720 and “under 2 MB” with no desktop split. Both numbers appear in Google properties. Use the live Help page the day you upload.
FlashKit Tools does not talk to YouTube. The image compressor only resizes and re-encodes in this tab so the file you then upload is small enough for the device you are on.
Stay under 2,000,000 bytes
Type 2000 in Custom KB. Keep 16:9. Nothing is uploaded to FlashKit Tools.
Open Image CompressorPixels first, then bytes
A 16:9 canvas at 3840×2160 is 8.3 megapixels. A flat graphic PNG can already be under 2 MB. A noisy photograph will not. Order of operations:
- Finish the design at 16:9. Do not letterbox a 9:16 screenshot into a 16:9 upload if you can avoid it — YouTube Help notes that some vertical videos replace a 16:9 custom thumb on Home.
- If the export is already under 2 MB and you will upload from a phone, stop. Extra compression only costs edge sharpness.
- If it is 4–12 MB, open the compressor, enable Resize, type 3840×2160 (or 1280×720 if that is your template), keep aspect ratio on so a 3000×4000 source is not stretched.
- If it is still over 2,000,000 bytes, Target Size → custom 2000. That is 2,000,000 bytes, not 2,048 KiB.
What we will not claim
- We will not say YouTube “requires” 1280×720. That was the older recommendation; 3840×2160 is what Help shows now.
- We will not say every thumbnail must be under 2 MB on desktop. Help says 50 MB there.
- We will not say the compressor produces a lossless 3840×2160 JPEG. If you need a pixel-perfect PNG and it already fits, keep the PNG.
Step-by-step
- Export JPG or PNG from your editor at 16:9.
- Open Image Compressor. Drop the file. HEIC from a phone still works; the decoder loads only then.
- Resize to 3840×2160 or 1280×720. Fit, do not stretch.
- If needed, custom target 2000 KB. Download and upload in Studio.
Compress a 16:9 thumbnail
Fit the box, then a 2,000 KB target if the phone upload still refuses the file.

- 100 KB vs 50 KB if you also make form photos — different budget, same tool.
- Transparent background maker only if you need a cut-out before you flatten onto a 16:9 card. YouTube thumbs are not transparent in the player.
