Strong Password Generator with Symbols: How Long Should a Password Be in 2026?

Search “strong password generator with symbols” and you will get two questions: how long should the string be in 2026, and do you still need punctuation. The short answer is length first, then a large character pool, then a password manager. Forced “one uppercase, one symbol” rules are out of date. The current U.S. digital-identity guidance says so explicitly.

What NIST SP 800-63B-4 actually says

NIST Special Publication 800-63B-4 (Digital Identity Guidelines: Authentication and Authenticator Management, July 2025; doi:10.6028/NIST.SP.800-63B-4) is the document verifiers are supposed to follow. For passwords it requires:

  • At least 15 characters when the password is the only factor; 8 is allowed only as part of multi-factor authentication (§3.1.1.2).
  • Verifiers should allow at least 64 characters so a passphrase or a manager dump is not truncated.
  • All printing ASCII characters, including space, should be accepted.
  • Verifiers shall not impose composition rules such as “must include a symbol.”
  • Verifiers shall not force periodic password changes unless there is evidence of compromise.
  • New passwords shall be checked against a blocklist of common and breached values.

That is why this page does not publish invented “years to crack” tables. Time-to-crack depends on the attacker’s hardware, whether the hash is salted, and whether the secret is in a breach list. NIST’s published rules are length, allow-list, and blocklist — not a stopwatch.

A practical length for 2026

NIST’s 8-character allowance applies only when the password is one factor of MFA. When the password is the only factor, the floor is 15. Neither figure is a target for a generated password — use 16+ (this tool’s default). For new logins:

  • 16 characters as a default when the string is random (mixed classes).
  • 20 or more for email, banking, cloud consoles, and any account that can reset everything else.
  • A long passphrase if you must type it often and the site allows 64 characters — four or five uncommon words beat a short “P@ssw0rd1”.

FlashKit’s password generator defaults to length 16 with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols enabled. Generation stays in this tab: bytes come from crypto.getRandomValues, each pool index is chosen with rejection sampling (no modulo bias), and the result is shuffled. FlashKit never sees the string.

Generate a password in this tab

Browser cryptographic RNG, local only. Symbols on by default. Entropy is length × log2(pool).

When symbols help — and when they do not

Symbols enlarge the pool. A 16-character string from 26+26+10+26 symbols has more combinations than the same length from letters alone. That is useful if the site stores a hash of the exact string and you are not reusing it.

Symbols do not help when:

  • The form silently strips punctuation or caps length at 12. Generate without symbols, or shorten, and store exactly what you registered.
  • You then write the same string on two sites. A breach of the weaker site leaks the stronger one.
  • You pick Summer2026!. Composition rules are satisfied; a blocklist should still reject it.

NIST tells verifiers not to demand a symbol. You can still include symbols for extra pool size when the form accepts them. FlashKit leaves symbols on by default and lets you turn them off.

How to read the entropy number

The tool shows length × log2(pool size) in bits, using the classes you actually enabled. That is a Shannon estimate for independent draws from that pool. It is not a lab measurement, and it does not detect “password1!”. If every class is unchecked, generate is disabled — there is no pool to draw from.

Store it; do not memorize twelve of them

A generator is not a vault. Copy once into a password manager (or the browser’s credential store you already use), enable the manager’s own 2FA, and keep a recovery path you have tested. Hardware security keys still beat a password for the accounts that support them.

FAQ

Is 12 characters enough in 2026?

Some sites still cap at 12. Use the maximum they allow and a full pool. For accounts you control, prefer 16+.

Does FlashKit upload the password?

No. The generator runs in the current tab. Close it on a shared computer.

Should I change passwords every 90 days?

NIST SP 800-63B-4 says not to force periodic changes without evidence of compromise. Change a password when it may have leaked, not because a calendar said so.
