Split a PDF Book into Chapters

A 300-page PDF of a textbook is a bad email and a worse WhatsApp document. The useful unit is the chapter. FlashKit’s Split PDF tool copies the ranges you type — 1-12, 13-28, 29-41 — into one PDF per range, in this tab. Nothing is sent to FlashKit Tools. Encrypted or DRM-locked books are rejected; unlock a legal personal copy in a desktop reader first.
Find the chapter ranges
Open the book in any reader. If it has an outline, the outline is the source of truth for start pages. Write them 1-based, the same way the splitter counts. If there is no outline, skim the thumbnails after you drop the file — they render only after the upload, so a 200-page book does not stall the article you are reading now. A chapter that starts mid-page still has to include that whole page; this is a page extractor, not a reflow engine.
Split the book by ranges
One PDF per range, then a ZIP. Rename the files to chapter titles after download.
Open Split PDFStep-by-step
- List chapters as ranges:
1-12, 13-28, 29-41. In One PDF per range, overlapping ranges stay in each file —1-5, 3-8makes a 5-page file and a 6-page file. Only One PDF with the selected pages drops later copies of a page. Backwards ranges error instead of silently swapping. - On Split PDF choose By page range and One PDF per range. Combined would glue the chapters back together. Per-page would explode a 300-page book into 300 files.
- Download the ZIP. Rename
pages-13-28.pdftoch02-methods.pdfbefore you send it. The tool will not invent titles from bookmarks, because those bookmarks usually do not survive the copy.
After the split
- A sideways plate in chapter 4: fix it with Rotate PDF on that chapter file — rotate one page permanently.
- A chapter still over an email cap: run split by file size on that chapter, or the compressor.
- Need two halves of a report, not named chapters? Use split a PDF into two files.
The general browser walkthrough remains how to split a PDF free in the browser. This page is only the chapter workflow.
Frequently asked questions
Can I type chapter names as the output filenames?
Not in the splitter. Files are named from page numbers (pages-13-28.pdf). Rename them after download. Bookmarks inside the original usually do not copy.
What if I do not know the chapter page numbers?
Open the PDF in a reader, jump the outline if it has one, and write the first page of each chapter. The thumbnails on Split PDF are a second check after the file is added.
Should I split by size instead?
Only if the goal is an email cap, not chapter boundaries. Size mode ignores chapters and packs pages until the next page would exceed the megabyte limit.
