Personal Loan EMI in India: Rate, Tenure, and Total Interest (2026)
Personal-loan ads in India lead with a monthly EMI that looks like a streaming subscription. The reducing-balance math is the same as a home loan; the rate is not. Unsecured tenures are short (often 12–60 months) and processing fees are taken up-front, so the effective cost is higher than the headline APR if you only look at the installment.
Estimate the installment yourself
Open the India EMI calculator. Enter the amount you will actually receive in the bank (principal minus processing fee if the fee is deducted up-front), the contractual annual rate, and tenure in months. Read total interest, not just EMI. A ₹3 lakh loan at 16% for 36 months is a different object from the same EMI stretched to 60 months.

Open EMI calculatorFee traps that do not show in a naive EMI
- Processing fee + GST: often 1–3% plus GST. If the lender deducts it from disbursal, you borrowed more than you received. Re-run EMI on the received amount and on the sanctioned amount; the gap is part of the true cost.
- Insurance add-ons bundled at checkout. They change the cash outflow, not the statutory EMI formula.
- Foreclosure charges on fixed-rate books. RBI rules have limited some floating-rate foreclosure fees for individuals — read the sanction letter, not a tweet.
Do not “invest the EMI difference” on a 22% loan
If a salesperson says keep the personal loan and start a SIP, put both numbers in writing. A 12% assumed SIP return does not cancel a 18–24% contractual loan. The SIP calculator is useful for retirement planning; it is a poor excuse to roll consumer debt.
Keep the paperwork small
Sanction letters and repayment schedules are PDFs. If you need to email a smaller copy to a CA or family member, the PDF compressor rewrites the file in the browser — it does not upload the statement to FlashKit. Strip nothing that your lender requires you to retain.
Disclaimer (not financial advice)
FlashKit calculators run reducing-balance EMI and compound-SIP arithmetic in your browser. They are planning aids, not a bank sanction letter, a GSTN filing, SEBI-registered investment advice, or a substitute for a chartered accountant. Actual EMI depends on processing fees, insurance, prepayment clauses, and the lender’s day-count. Mutual-fund returns are not guaranteed. Confirm numbers with your lender or advisor before you sign.
