Compress PDF at 150 or 200 DPI for Scans

Compress PDF at 150 or 200 DPI for Scans

A desktop scanner that writes 300 DPI JPEG pages will not magically become email-sized until those pixels are reduced. FlashKit Tools’ PDF compressor can downsample embedded images to 72, 96, 150, or 200 DPI from the size they occupy on the page. Target Size mode walks those levels for you. Quality mode lets you pick one.

This page is the DPI how-to. The 200 KB button is covered in compress a PDF to 200 KB. Nested forms and already-DCT scans are why some scanned PDFs will not compress.

Pick 150 or 200 DPI

Quality mode: you choose. Target Size mode: starts at 200 DPI and steps down. Nothing is uploaded.

What DPI means on a PDF page

PDF images are not “300 DPI files.” They are pixel grids drawn in a box of points (72 points = 1 inch). Effective DPI is pixels ÷ (box inches). A 2480×3508 image painted on an A4 page (595×842 pt) is about 300 DPI. The same grid painted in a 200×200 pt photo slot is much denser — and should not be crushed to 72 DPI just because another image on the page is a full-page scan.

FlashKit Tools walks page content and Form XObjects, records the largest placement for each image, and only downsamples when that effective DPI is above the target. It does not upscale a 96 DPI phone snap to 200.

150 vs 200 vs 96

DPI Typical use Trade
200 Office scan you might print Heavier file, safer for signatures
150 Email / portal, still readable The usual first cut
96 Screen only Fine detail goes
72 Smallest JPEG budget Zoom will look soft

Target Size also tries 120 DPI between 150 and 96, then 60 and 50 with a low-legibility warning. Those last two are not in the Quality menu on purpose.

Step-by-step in Quality mode

  1. Drop the unlocked scan. Rotate a sideways leaf first with Rotate PDF if needed — compression will not straighten it.
  2. Choose Quality mode. Set 200 DPI if a printer might see the file; 150 DPI if it is for a form preview.
  3. Keep JPEG quality around 70–80% unless the file is still huge.
  4. Download and check a zoomed line of 10-point text. If you cannot read it, raise DPI rather than raising quality on a 72 DPI grid.

Need a JPEG of one page at a labelled DPI instead? PDF to JPG uses 72 / 150 / 300 DPI on the canvas. That is a render, not an in-place recompress.
