Random name picker

This page picks one item from a list you type in the current browser tab. Enter names, prizes, or chores, one per line, then press Pick a Random Winner. For about two seconds the result area flips through the list so the room can see a draw in progress. When the animation stops, one line is shown as the winner. FlashKit does not upload the list, does not keep a draw history, and does not need an account.

Selection uses Math.random() and Math.floor to choose an index. That is ordinary JavaScript randomness: good enough for a standup, a classroom volunteer, or a party game, and not a cryptographically secure or legally certified raffle. Empty lines are ignored after trim. If the box has no remaining lines, the page says “Please enter some items.” instead of inventing a name. Reloading the tab restores the fruit sample and forgets the last winner.

Worked example. Keep the default list: Apple, Banana, Orange, Grape, Strawberry — five lines. Each draw has a one-in-five chance for any fruit. The picker does not remove a winner, so a second click can land on Apple again. That is sampling with replacement. If you need “already picked” names out of the hat, delete that line yourself before the next click. There is no multi-winner field and no weighted chance slider.

Use this for informal turns: who presents first, which snack to buy, which backlog ticket to grab. Do not use it for cash prizes, public lotteries, or anything a venue’s rules say must be drawn from a hat with a recorded process. Math.random is not auditable after the fact. If you already announced a winner, screenshot the result — this tab is the only record, and Refresh wipes it.

The controls match this article. The textarea label is Enter items (one per line). The sample fruits are only a starting point. Pick a Random Winner disables itself while the two-second shuffle runs and the label reads Picking…. The result card says “The winner is:” once the interval finishes. There is no undo, no export, and no group split on this page — use the random group generator when you need teams. Duplicate a name only if you really want two tickets in the hat. How to Use

  1. Replace the sample list with one name or item per line. Blank lines are ignored.
  2. Click Pick a Random Winner. The button shows Picking… for about two seconds.
  3. Read the highlighted winner. Screenshot the card if the room needs a record.
  4. Draw again if the group agrees. The previous winner stays in the list unless you delete it.
  5. Do not refresh after you promised a result — this tab is not a server-side log.

Key Features

  • One winner per click from a local line list
  • Two-second shuffle so a classroom can watch the draw
  • Empty lines ignored; empty list shows a clear error
  • No account, no upload, no draw archive
  • Pairs with group generator, tick counter, and timer

How random this picker really is

  • Math.random is a pseudo-random generator in the JavaScript engine. It is fine for informal picks and not suitable for gambling or cryptography.
  • Each click is independent. The last winner is not excluded unless you delete that line.
  • There is no seed you can publish, so a skeptic cannot replay the exact draw.
  • Very short lists (two names) still work; one name always “wins”.
  • Password-quality randomness belongs on the password generator, not on this classroom tool.

Common ways people use this random picker

  • Classroom cold-call or who-cleans-the-board without playing favorites.
  • Standup raffle for a snack run or a demo slot.
  • Party game: paste guests, pick who starts.
  • Backlog lottery: paste ticket titles, pick one to start after lunch.
  • Need teams instead of one name? Use the random group generator. Need a tally of votes? Use the tick counter.

Limits, fairness, and tips

  • Duplicate lines are separate entries. Typing Alex twice gives Alex two chances — usually a mistake.
  • The animation always lasts about two seconds even on a two-item list. That is theatre, not extra entropy.
  • Cash or regulated raffles need a documented process your venue requires. This page is not that process.
  • Related guides: strong passwords (when the “random” you need is a secret) and developer productivity hacks.
  • Closing the tab clears the custom list. Copy names to a doc if you reuse the same roster every week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone prove the draw was fair?

Not cryptographically. The page uses Math.random in this tab with no published seed. Fine for a classroom; not a legal raffle system.

Does the picker remove a winner from the next draw?

No. Sampling is with replacement. Delete the line yourself if that person should be out of the hat.

Can I pick several winners at once?

Not as a count field. Click again for another name, or use the random group generator to split a roster into teams.

Is my list uploaded to FlashKit?

No. The textarea never leaves this browser tab. Refreshing restores the fruit sample and forgets the last winner.

What happens if I leave the list empty?

You see “Please enter some items.” Blank lines after trim do not count as names.

Is Math.random good enough for passwords or lotteries?

No. Use the password generator for secrets. Use a documented, witnessed process for money prizes. This tool is an informal name draw.
