Merge vs Split PDF: Which to Use When (2026)

People search “merge or split PDF” as if they were two modes of one button. They are inverse jobs. FlashKit has both: Merge PDF concatenates unlocked files in the order you set; Split PDF copies ranges out of one file. Both stay in the tab. Neither is a full outline editor.

Use merge when

  • You have a cover letter PDF and a CV PDF and the portal wants one attachment.
  • Scans arrived as one file per page and you want a single packet.
  • You converted two .docx chapters with Word to PDF and need one handout.

Add at least two PDFs, reorder with the arrows (top file first), then merge. Encrypted files stop the job. Bookmarks and some form fields may drop.

Combine PDFs locally

Reorder the queue, then download one document. No FlashKit upload.

Use split when

  • Only pages 4–7 are the signed agreement.
  • You need one PDF per page for a naming convention.
  • A 40 MB pack will not go through email even after a compress attempt — send the chapter, not the annex.

Ranges look like 1-3, 5, 8-10. Output can be one combined file, one file per range, or one file per page (ZIP when there are several). Full steps: how to split a PDF in the browser.

Extract pages locally

Ranges or single pages. Combined PDF or a ZIP of parts.

Do not use either to “make it smaller”

Merge increases page count. Split reduces page count but does not recompress JPEGs. For attachment size, start with the compressor, then split only if you can legally send fewer pages. That fork is compress vs split for email limits.

Rotate sideways scans before you merge a packet so page 3 is not landscape in a portrait stack — Rotate PDF.

What stays in the browser

FlashKit’s split, rotate, merge, compress, and Word-to-PDF tools run in the current tab with pdf-lib (Word-to-PDF also unzips the .docx locally). Those pages do not upload the file to FlashKit. Encrypted PDFs are rejected. A crashed or closed tab drops the in-memory copy. Other FlashKit tools — SEO audits, social downloaders, Gemini captions — do use the network after a disclosure. Do not treat the whole site as “never sends data.”
