YouTube thumbnail downloader

This tool reads a YouTube watch, share, or youtu.be URL, extracts the 11-character video ID, and lists the official thumbnail URLs YouTube already hosts on img.youtube.com. It does not scrape the watch page or invent a 4K still — maxresdefault is typically 1280×720 when the uploader provided one, otherwise HQ (480×360) is the fallback.

Previewing the images loads them from YouTube’s CDN in your browser. The download button first tries corsproxy.io so the file can be saved with a filename; if that proxy fails, you can still open the image URL directly. Use only videos you have the right to copy stills from.

How to Use

  1. Copy the video URL from youtube.com or youtu.be.
  2. Paste it in the box. The tool extracts the video ID and shows every official size it can construct.
  3. Check Max Resolution first. If YouTube never published maxresdefault, that tile will look empty or broken — use High Quality instead.
  4. Click the size you want. If the proxy download fails, right-click the preview and save the image from img.youtube.com.

Key Features

  • Supports watch, embed, shorts-style, and youtu.be links
  • Lists maxresdefault, hqdefault, sddefault, and mqdefault
  • No YouTube login and no watermark added by FlashKit
  • Download may go through a public CORS proxy; the image URL itself is YouTube’s

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a 4K thumbnail downloader?

YouTube’s public thumbnail endpoints are maxresdefault (often 1280×720, sometimes 1920×1080) plus smaller official sizes. The tool does not upscale or reconstruct a custom 4K frame from the video.

Do you store the video URL?

FlashKit does not keep a history of URLs. The page builds img.youtube.com links in your browser. Clicking download may send that image URL to a CORS proxy so the file can be saved.

Why is maxres missing?

Older or low-resolution uploads often have no maxresdefault.jpg. Use HQ or SD. A 404 on maxres is normal, not a bug in the extractor.

Can I use the image in a blog or thumbnail mockup?

YouTube thumbnails are usually copyrighted by the channel. Download for personal mockups or if you own the video. Do not republish someone else’s thumbnail as your own.
